Southampton Airport - SOU – General Information

Southampton, located in Hampshire county, about 5 miles north-east of the town of Eastleigh, is a small airport with one runway. It is located just by the motorway, thus getting to and from it is relatively quick and trouble-free. Public transport – buses, trains and taxis – have an easy access to Southampton.

The airport processes nearly 2 million passengers every year. There are 40 destinations available (with domestic flight around the United Kingdom and departures to France being the most popular). Airport is mostly used by high-quality airlines, and the passengers use the airport both for business and for tourist travel (according to 2013 studies performed by airport authorities, 85% of passengers belong to ABC1 group).

Southampton airport was built over the ruins of a Roman villa. A couple of simple runways were built around the area, and in 1917 construction of hangars has begun. Just after World War I the airfield was used as a temporary refugee camp, which was closed in 1931. Next year Southampton Corporation bought the area and redesigned it as a military air base. 1965 was the turning point for Southampton – a concrete runway was built and later expanded. After that, the airfield was upgraded to accommodate large planes.

Southampton is very well equipped and it is able to process the still growing number of passengers. There are three car parks: long and short stop as well as priority parking, located just by the terminal, which allows for quick and efficient luggage unloading. Drop-off and pick-up zones are located vis-à-vis the terminal. Stops are free for the first 10 minutes.

ATMs, restaurants, bistros and variety of stores are all located inside the terminal. Internet access is widely available, and the medical facility can be found in the main terminal. Car rental and taxis can be found nearby. The area is well guarded and there are conference rooms well suited for business meetings.

Area around Southampton has many landmarks worth seeing, including Marwell Zoo, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Beaulieu, Winchester Cathedral, Southampton Football Club, the Ageas Bowl and, of course, the famous Stonehenge. Get a taxi, a minicab or private hire taxi services to enjoy your weekend out in these inspirational locations.
